Microplastic Removal in Secondary Wastewater Treatment: 70-95% Capture in Activated Sludge, Fiber vs. Particle Behavior, and Sludge Disposal Risks

Microplastic Removal in Secondary Wastewater Treatment: 70-95% Capture in Activated Sludge, Fiber vs. Particle Behavior, and Sludge Disposal Risks

2026-08-04

This study tracks microplastics through a pilot-scale activated sludge system treating secondary wastewater, showing that 70-95% of polyethylene and polypropylene particles (10-500 um) are retained in sludge through flocculation, adsorption, and entrapment. Fibrous microplastics and larger particles are captured more readily, while particles under 50 um tend to escape into effluent. The analysis also covers sludge age trade-offs and the secondary pollution pathway when sludge is reused in agriculture.
